About the subject:
The Design and Technology department has three full time and one part time teaching staff. It has very good facilities and is housed in a purpose designed zone with the following areas:
- Resistant materials workshop.
- Product design classroom equipped with computers
- Food technology classroom
- Design/graphic products classroom equipped with computers
- Textiles classroom
KS3 Overview:
Design and technology is taught on a carousel system in years 7, 8 and 9. Four areas of study are completed and assessed in each of the three year groups.
Year 7 programmes of study:
- Introduction to food technology/focussed practical skills
- Textiles – Ugly Doll
- 2D design and make product
- Steady hand game – Workshop based
Year 8 programmes of study:
- Food technology – Welsh food products
- Design – Designing a candle holder
- Workshop – Manufacturing a candle holder
- Technology Design Skills
Year 9 programmes of study:
- Food technology – Healthy diet
- Textiles – Zipped case
- Design – Point of sale display
- Workshop – Pewter Casting/Night Light project
Practical work is an important element of the KS3 curriculum.
KS4 Overview:

Summary of assessment
Unit 1: Principles of Food and Nutrition [40%]
- Written examination: 1 hour 30 minutes.
- This unit will consist of two sections both containing compulsory questions.
Unit 2: Food and Nutrition in Action [60%]
- Non-examination assessment.
- Assessment 1: 10 hours – scientific food investigation
- Assessment 2: 15 hours – food preparation assessment

Summary of assessment
Unit 1 : Written paper (2 hours) [50%]
- This unit will consist of exam questions based on the theory work that pupils will undertake over the 2 years that they study the subject.
- Theory work is split up into the areas of ‘Core knowledge and understanding’ and ‘In-depth knowledge and understanding :Product design’
Unit 2: NEA assessment task [50%]
- Briefs are set by the exam board and released to school on 1st of June every year
- Pupils have a minimum of 35 hours in school to complete their chosen task
